The first thing you should understand is that Koi ponds aren't just holes in the ground wherein your can store and keep your fish. In order to make them work well and sustain your fish, consider the things that you need to do as you start to plan for its construction. Follow the simple rules that will make sure you’re not going to end up with a costly hole filled with nothing but dead fish!
The primary thing you need to consider is to have a professional build your pond, unless, of course, you already have knowledge in construction, outdoor landscaping and fish keeping. You may think that building the pond yourself will save you a lot of cash, but this kind of mentality wouldn't take you further from the case!
If your pond is not built properly right from the start, what'll happen is that you're going to end up spending a great deal of cash on fixing problems that may occur in the future. With an improper set-up of your pond, you won't be able to save your pets from illness and disease!
Remember that a professional will always give your what you want. They may give their own inputs when it comes to a much-needed decision making, but in the end, they will always do what you tell them to. They are blameless if ever your pond fails due to factors such as size, location, etc. Beware also of those extremely cheap quotes, because they may cut corners that can really cause you problems later (while these will come in differently, there are no significant differences between them).
Remember that these ponds are by no means water troughs for animals or swimming pools, and that's the reason why much care should be taken in building and planning your pond. Although it may cost you more cash than building those typical swimming pools, the rewards that you can reap are really much greater! Children and other pets can cause problems to your pond, that's why it's important that you should keep them out.
Kids who take the liberty of swimming in your pond can cause chemical imbalance and major problems, such as leaks. As for the other pets, it's okay to have them around your pond, but they might chase your fish around and even mess with your filtration system! That's why it's best to keep them away from the pond.
Keep in mind that other issues might come up that may really need your special attention, just like any other pets out there. You can do these things: take some extra time to clear up those infections from algae; make sure that somebody with the appropriate knowledge would be the one to maintain your pond to make it available when you return from your vacation; and visit your vet.
Once the ponds are completely made, most of them are going to be permanently in place, and this means you can't decide within 2 or 3 weeks that you want to have the construction of your pond done in the frontyard rather than in the backyard. Take time to plan carefully every aspect of your pond, considering the size requirements and placement. Once the pond is built, you can do only a little to alter it, and this is something that you need to remember always. As this will demand a lot of work on your part, make sure that you have the necessary time to do it.
